Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy

When periodontal disease is caught early, scaling and root planing and/or antibiotics may be all that is required for treatment. Antibiotics are used to control and eliminate harmful bacteria that may be contributing to periodontal disease. Scaling removes plaque and calculus build-up from the teeth and slightly below the gumline. Root planing smoothes root surfaces so gum tissues can reattach to the tooth surface.

If your periodontal disease doesn’t require surgery, your dentist will discuss options with you on what will be an effective approach to treatment.

Surgical Periodontal Therapy

In severe cases of periodontal disease, your dentist may consider referring you to a specialist for crown lengthening, gum grafting or bone grafting. These are all surgical procedures that can and should be discussed with your HomeTown Dental dentist.
